Small business marketing strategies on creating that slogan

by Laurie Panas Brackett

Businesses should think in terms of creating a smart slogan or tag line that promises to be a sales aid. What is that unique selling point that my product or service delivers? “Takes a licking and keeps on ticking” tells the customers that by buying a Timex watch it will work no matter how hard they are on the watch. “Melts in your mouth, not in your hands” from M&M Mars came out of a new production process where they could coat the M&M’s so this seal would not get the candy all over kids hands. Mothers were thrilled and this process and smart slogan helped spike M&M sales for decades.

Catchy slogans are fun and easy to remember so they are used often. I still like the Almond Joy – “Sometimes You feel like a nut, sometimes You don’t”. Simple slogans can work well, especially when you have the ad budget Nike does to promote “Just Do It”. Developing a slogan for your company isn’t all fun and games. There is a lot to consider. Mainly, can it help to explain your services or product offerings in a quick, simple manner?

Let’s see how good you are at recalling the top 10 company slogans [from the early 2000's]
A little dab’ll do ya.”

“Have it your way.”

“Where do you want to go today?”

“Because I’m worth it.”

“We try harder.”

“When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.”

“It’s everywhere you want to be.”

“Drivers wanted.”
