We all have memories. We all love to document our memories—in photos, letters, notes, stories. Why should we feel any different with our memories on Facebook? I remember the day I signed up for “The Facebook” (the domain was still www.thefacebook.com back then). It was November of 2004, my freshman year of college. I was young, naïve, and was told by a girlfriend that I needed to sign up because everyone was on it. So I jumped on the bandwagon and joined the website, created a profile, and uploaded a photo. Ever since that day, I don’t think I have gone more than a week without signing onto my Facebook account.
Back when I signed up it was still only for college students that had an .edu email address. It was such a basic website at the time that your Wall was just a text box where people could type things in it and edit whatever they wanted—even stuff other people typed in it. It was back when that nameless guy was still in the upper-left corner of the site. It was long before business pages, fan pages, high schoolers, and your boyfriend’s aunt were allowed to join. It was a private community—just for those who were young, in college, and wanted to socialize online. Facebook (more specifically Mark Zuckerberg) did what AOL couldn’t, made online socializing fun again.
Last night after work I went online and read up about the F8 Keynote. Zuckerberg talked about this new profile called the Timeline. It was going to bring back all of the memories I had made starting in 2004 through today on my profile. The minute I read about it I wanted it—immediately. I wanted to relive those days of living in a dorm with my best friend and all the fun escapades I had in college with her. Now I can. With the Facebook Timeline I can look back and it’s much better than opening up a photo album. I can view photos but I can also read what people wrote on my wall and what we talked about back in 2005.
I signed up for the Timeline this morning before coming into work and quickly ran through my new profile (no, it is not open to the public yet, but it will be soon). I saw when I was living with my best friend, when I started dating my now husband, when I graduated college, when I got married, and it even noted when I started working here at Princeton Marketing. I got emotional because I saw how much my life had changed in just 7 years—right on the one website where I have spent more time than any other site on the web.
Shortly, the Timeline will be open to the public. And when it does go live, I recommend everyone switch over. You will feel what I felt this morning—nostalgia; reliving your past in just 5 minutes. Although this new profile is for people and not Business Pages, that does not mean businesses should just give up on Facebook. In fact, it means the complete opposite. Businesses need to remember that Facebook is only 7 years old. The social revolution is just getting started. And this Timeline is the true start of Social Media.
Facebook may intimidate a business owner because of how much they change their website, but that is why it is so successful. They continue to grow as we grow. Businesses should keep in mind that more people spend time on Facebook than any other website, so to really reach out to your demo you need to reach them on Facebook.
