1. iPhone 5
If you haven’t already heard, Apple sold over 5 million iPhone 5′s on opening weekend, September 24, 2012. Pre-orders of the phone topped 2 million in the first 24 hours. All those new iPhone 5 users are browsing the web lightening fast with 4G LTE. That means they are browsing online on their phones more frequently because their internet is faster. If they come across a standard website that is not mobile-friendly–especially a website that contains Flash–then those iPhone 5 users are going to bypass the website for one that’s in a mobile format. If you’re not mobile and they bypass you, then their next step could be going to your direct competitor!
2. People have high demands and low patience
Americans today have less patience for things that move slow: lines at Starbucks, the news, and the web. They want instant gratification, everything fast and everything at their fingertips. If your website loads slowly on their smartphone they are going to give up and move on to the next site. I know I do. I give a website about 30 seconds to load, if I still have nothing, then I move on. That’s how fast-paced we have become today. And if you’re not prepared, you may get lost in the shuffle.
3. Smartphones will account for 54% of all cellphones in the world by 2013, according to iSuppli.
Of that 54% worldwide, the United States is projected to have 137.5 million smartphone users, according to Statista. Do you want your regular website to miss out on over 137 million Americans? Didn’t think so.
