Marketing Campaigns to “Trade Up” are Now Out
By Monte Brackett
The latest on mass affluence is not promising. The US suffered a huge financial blow during these last few years of economic downturn and the biggest losers were the middle-class consumers. These make up nearly half of the Americans who are now “financially fragile”. Per the Pew Center who found in a 2009 TNS Global data report, this group makes up 45 percent of Americans who could not come up with $2000 in 30 days to pay for unexpected emergencies. In the Ad Age/Digitas report, consumers over the age of 35 in the $100,000-$199,000 income range have lost ground or find themselves hard pressed to stay even with the lifestyle they had prior to 2007.
Are Baby Boomers ‘Easing into Retirement?’
Not this generation. According to the Pew Research Center, people older than 55 are the fastest-growing group of self-employed workers in the US. And how do they keep themselves competitive? By staying in good health. Health is a major concern for the baby boomers as well as staying young and youthful looking. 80% of people between 55 – 64 claim to be in good to excellent physical shape, reports the national center for health statistics. This group makes up 27% of our adult population and their aging patterns are very different from their parent’s generation. More than 10,000 people turn 50 every day. By 2015, those that are 50 and older will represent 45% of the US population.
Paperless Digital Coupons Are Expected to Grow in 2012
Thanks in part to the new Google Wallet and other cool gadgets.
In addition to online coupons, digital offers in the way of QR codes and bar codes that you can scan using your mobile phone’s camera, iPad, or Goggle Wallet will be expanding in 2012. The virtual push can be contributed to the consumer green paperless movement and the technology timely intro to cool digital gadgets like the Google Wallet, a virtual wallet that lets you pay using your phone. It’s a faster and more convenient way to pay that lets your phone scan bars at the checkout while the phone sends out the payment signal.
Growing Web Sales by Tablet Users
Adobe Systems Incorporated, the producers of Adobe creative software, released their first ‘Digital Marketing Insights’ report. This report focuses on the increase in tablet users and percentages of purchases made by those uses. It also compares these figures to purchasing activity of both smartphone and traditional (computer) users.
The report discuses several interesting figures. The two that stood out to me were:
1. The users of tablets spend over 50% more per purchase than those who used smartphones and over 20% more than visitors who used computers.
HootSuite is a Tracking Tool, Not a Crutch

Things I’ve learned while using HootSuite and Twitter
Lately I’ve been getting more involved in our own Princeton Marketing Twitter account, @PrincetonMktg. I enjoy monitoring and working on our clients’ social media accounts but it’s a lot of fun to work on building our own social presence. Here are a few things I have learned since working on our own Twitter account for the past year.
